At first I considered the discovery of my necklace a huge breakthrough, but the next few days were quiet. I hardly saw Jack or Freddie. I guessed they were busy figuring out how the pieces of this latest development fitted with the rest of the puzzle. I was still reeling, and wondering why my dad had the necklace was never far from my mind.

My Friday evening shift at Ruby’s was calm, giving me plenty of zombie-time to think.

An unexpected visit from Scarlett and Lola brought me back to life.

“Hi. It’s good to see you,” I told the striking blonde as I cooed over Lola.

I got Scarlett a coffee, and we chatted a bit, mainly about Lola, before she said, “Jack said he told you about Drayton and me.” She said her brother’s name with such sadness.

“I have to admit, I was surprised. I mean, you are so nice, and he’s so…” I trailed off, unsure how to be polite about Dray.

“I have tried to bring him back onto the right path, but he won't listen to me. He sees me as a traitor.”

“It must be difficult for you to be caught in the middle.”

“I am more worried for him. He has been through so much; his actions now show nothing of the baby brother I loved. When I left with Rick, I caused so much upset…” Tears pooled in her brilliant green eyes.

I reached across the counter and squeezed her hand. “If that was all it took it would have happened anyway. Families can be difficult, but you can’t control Dray's actions. Nor are you responsible for them. He isn’t a child.”

She nodded, but I didn’t think I had truly convinced her.

“This thing he has about Jack, this rivalry… He feels I have replaced him.”

“Scarlett,” I said firmly, “Dray is not coming after us. He is pleasing himself and we are trying to stop him. Whatever he does or doesn't do is down to him, not you. He has a choice. You always have a choice in life, of which path you take. I don't think things on Aether are much different to Earth in that respect.”

She smiled at me, and warmth enveloped my body. I wondered what I would think if I didn't know she was an alien. Maybe that she was an angel, I thought to myself with a grin. Not that I believed in angels any more than I had aliens before I met Jack, but no matter what, Scarlett clearly wasn’t simply your average beautiful woman. She had a glow about her, almost as if her aura was visible.

“No, you are right about that. They are not. Thank you. I appreciate the reminder.”

Just then the bell above the door jangled, and Jack walked in.

“What are you two doing here?” he asked Scarlett, tickling Lola under the chin. She giggled and clutched his finger.

“Having a coffee and a chat with Eliza.”

Something in her tone told me there was more to it, even before Jack’s eyes narrowed, and
